Hi - I was on two meds. for H/B one Losartan 50mg and amlopine 5mg. I also have a cough which is ongoing for years also have bronchitis this fall which has left me with a cough with mucus which is clear and so my M.D, told me to stop taking the losartan for 3 weeks to see if the cough goes away. It didn t. He went on vacation. I noticed my blood pressure going up and called and told his office that I am going back on the losartan as I started getting spots in front of my eyes and a headache. I have read on line that it is not a good idea to just stop any h/b med but gradually lower the dose over a period of time. I feel better taking my Losartan but have mixed feelings about continuing with this doctor for future treatment. What would you advise?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Yes, you are right. You should not stop any antihypertensive drug all of a sudden. You need to taper it down gradually. In my opinion, you should definitely consult another doctor because Losartan can not cause coughing, so no need to stop Losartan.
For coughing, you should consult pulmonologist and get done a clinical examination of the respiratory system and PFT (Pulmonary Function Test). PFT will tell you about the severity of the disease and treatment is based on severity only. You will need inhaled bronchodilators (Formoterol or Salmeterol) and inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) (Budesonide or Fluticasone). Don't worry, you will be alright with all these.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
