Suggest Treatment For Cough In Children Despite Taking Mucinex
I took my 10 year old son to pediatrician last wednesday because he was very congested and had cough. I was just recovering from bronchitis so I was worried my son had caught the same. Dr said his ears and lungs sounded fine and said to continue to take otc meds such as tylenol, dylsum, and mucinex. My son has no fever but fri, sat, sun, mon and today - he is very sleepy. Other than being exhausted, he has no other symptoms besides lingering cough. I m concerned because I feel he should be recovering now.
Hello and Welcome to 'Ask A Doctor" service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice. Bronchitis can be caused by viruses and it is likely that your son acquired his respiratory infection from you. Just like if you had a cold and he caught a cold from you. Occasionally an upper respiratory infection can last for more than a week. If an upper respiratory tract is prolonged, lasting 7-10 days, then it is possible the patient has developed sinusitis. Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further. Arnold Zedd, MD, FAAP
