Suggest Treatment For Cough, Sneezing And Sore Throat

Last week had a sore throat next day gone but replaced with sneezing and coughing. Lots of nasal drainage, which still is a problem. Feels like mucus in back of throat. I keep trying to clear it out by coughing and taking mucinex, but seems to be hanging on. What is this and is there anything else I can take to clear it up

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello dear,

The symptoms as mentioned in your post is indicative of Upper respiratory tract infection.
Mucinex acts as a mucolytic agent. It will thin out the mucous, causing its easy expulsion.
However, if the underlying cause is not treated, it will keep recurring.

Clinical examination is important for diagnosis, so I will advise you to consult your Doctor/ ENT specialist for a proper clinical examination.
Certain investigations like complete blood count and culture & sensitivity(C/S) of the throat swab will be helpful.
Once the infection is established, a course of antibiotics will be prescribed against the causative organism.

Till then, symptomatic relief can be obtained with:
1. Warm salt water gargle to relieve throat pain.
2. Analgesic anti-inflammatory preparation like paracetamol.
3. Antihistamine preparations like Cetrizine or Allegra can also be used to provide symptomatic relief.
4. Avoid taking cold food & drinks, maintain adequate hydration & take soft, non-spicy foods.

Wishing you a good health.
Take care.
