Suggest Treatment For Cramps And Diarrhea After Abortion

Hello. I had an abortion this morning at 7am and have still had severe cramps since I've been home. The past 2 hours now the cramps have gotten worse as well as constant diarrhea. Just wondering if this is any cause for alarm? It's not 6pm.
Thanks so much

Hello, and I hope I can help you today.

The symptoms you should expect after having an abortion are similar to how you would feel after giving birth, but on a smaller scale. It is normal for cramping to persist, even for a few days, and the diarrhea can be due to the referred cramps affecting your intestines or due to medication that may have been given to you during the procedure to help stop the bleeding.

Any type of anti inflammatory pain reliever, such as Ibuprofen, Paracetamol or Naproxen, can be taken to help with the cramping. treating the cramps should help the diarrhea as well.

If your abdominal pain worsens or is associated with fever, vomiting, or heavy bleeding from the vagina, you may have has a complication from your procedure and you should contact your doctor or clinic. But cramping alone, especially in the first 24 hours, is common and normal.

I hope I was able to adequately answer your question today and that my advice was helpful.

Best wishes,

Dr. Brown
