Suggest Treatment For Deranged Thyroid Function During Pregnancy

I am 26yrs. 2 months pregnant. After 3 years of marriage, I have conceived now. We decided to have kids only after 3yrs and so we tried for kids after 3yrs and I conceived. When I met a gynaecologist to confim my pregnancy they took thyroid test also. TSH level is 7.9. so she advised THYRONORM 50mg. I am taking the tablets without fail. I am planning to take one more round of thyro test when I complete taking 1 month of THYRONORM 50mg. My question is - I heard child s brain development will be affectd if the thyroid is not secreating as per norms. From your experience, what do you advise me to do to get my child without any retardation? Will my thyroid level be under control? Previously I didnot have any thyroid problem. 2. I am so worried about my child s health. I keep thinking that MY CHILD SHOULD BE BORN WITHOUT ANY RETARDATION.MY CHILD SHOULD BE HALE AND HEALTHY. MY CHILD SHOULD NOT HAVE ANY PROBLEM. This thought really disturbs me alot. I will try to come of it and be normal but then after sometime I get back to the same thought. No negative thoughts should affect my baby also. Please advise me.

Hello, and I hope I can help you today.

First ma'am i want you to try to relax and stop worrying so much! Thyroid disease is common in many women and if your medication is at the right level during the pregnancy, everything will be fine. Babies being born with retardation from
low thyroid hormone are very rare.

Your doctor will likely check your hormone level and adjust your medication level every few months. It takes that long for the thyroid to adjust to the medication. And your free thyroid hormone level, not your TSH (which is the high number you mentioned) is what determines how much is going to the baby.

So in summary I am sure your baby is fine and as long as you take your thyroid medication as instructed by your doctor your pregnancy has an excellent prognosis.

So please try not to stress so much about this condition anymore as your baby really is not at significant risk.

I hope I answered your question and that my advice was helpful,

Best wishes, Dr. Brown
