Suggest Treatment For Dizziness With History Of Heart Disease, Anemia And TIA
Dear Dr.,My 85 yr old mother was an admitt from the ER for SOB & dizziness. This is one of many admissions. In her lab work tonight her Creatine was 41. Her history consists of heart disease with 2 bypass s, Anemia, edema, CHF, TIA s etc...She does have a living will & does not want any extrodinary measures. I guess what I am asking is is this progression of her cardiac symptoms. She is refusing all treatment. Would it be time to discuss Hospice care with her. We are running out of options & we can not be making these weekly visits to the ER. Any advise would be appreciated.
I am sorry to hear about you Mother. From your description it sounds like your mother has multiple problems and they are progressing rapidly. The one lab test you mention her Creatinine is significantly elevated. This is a sign of elevated kidney functions and with her heart problems will be difficult to treat. If she is not wanting any extraordinary measures then you must respect her wishes. You can help her by having her eat a low sodium diet and resting comfortably as possible. Her doctor can help maximize her medication for heart failure and kidney failure. If her overall prognosis is poor then hospice is always an alternative. They will be able to help keep her comfortable
