sir one of my friend had an accident when he was just 17yrs old it was a head injury after immediately after that he got his first fits attack and he was unconsious for 3 days.he was given versitol 500mg for atleast 7yrs now he is 35 yrs old but he has left this medicine since the last 3yrs.he didnot have any fits attack till now but for the last 10 days he is getting a feeling of that attack.kindly suggest what to do or whom to consult.thanks mamtta

Brain injury caused by head trauma is a risk factor to have epileptic seizures, so your friend is a high risk patient. From what you are describing he hasn't had a clear generalized attack during these days, but either isolated aura (symptoms preceding attack) or partial seizures. If that is the case treatment should be started to prevent both these partial seizures and possible generalized seizures. In case he is not sure and doesn't want to go on treatment based on a suspicion, an EEG would be an indicator of epileptiform activity in the brain. Regarding which drug, there are many alternatives (like Levetiracetam, Lamotrigine, Carbamazepine), but they are all prescription drugs and I strongly recommend he discusses their use with a neurologist, because he will need regular follow up visits to evaluate their efficacy and side effects.
