Suggest Treatment For Heavy Vaginal Bleeding During Menstruation

I have been menstruating for one week 4 days; with very heavy bleeding, large clots about 3 inches long. today I have gone through 4 tampons in 3 hours. Is thins concerning or part of the change process? I am feeling tired and have added a multivitamin to my regime. I do not see the physician very often and try to avoid medication if possible. Have had three children, never been on birth control.

Hallow Dear,

Though I do not know your age which is very important in figuring out the differential diagnosis, form your family history, I guess you would be 30 + years of age.

The first condition I would think of is Fibroid in the uterus; however, this would cause pain in abdomen with heavy bleeding. Secondly, it could be Hormonal imbalance leading to such heavy bleeding; it could even be Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). Cancer of the endometrium also has to be considered. At this age Thyroid dysfunction also is common cause of heavy menstruation. And lastly I would like to rule out any infection of the reproductory organs and/or tissues around them.

Clinical internal examination should be carried out initially to look for Pelvic inflammation. Then get ultrasonography which will inform us regarding the rest of the condition. Blood examination is mandatory since you are bleeding so heavily over a period of 12 days. Hormonal profile would look for hormonal imbalance.

To control the bleeding immediately, you have to take some Progesterone, Oestrogen preparation. Please start iron preparation with high proteins immediately to support the blood loss.

If there are tumours, you may have to undergo surgical intervention while hormonal imbalance may be treated by relevant hormonal treatment.

Please report to your Gynaecologist ASAP.
