Hi my father was released from the hospital today. He had a pacemaker/defiulator installed for his heart. While he was there he found he had high blood sugar readings that were not controlled untill he was given insulin. Now he has a 280 blood sugar reading. Should he return to the ER?
The blood sugar of 280 mg /dl is high but there is nothing to panic. There is no reason to rush to the ER, but you can contact his treating doctor for advice regarding the dose of Insulin. There are several causes including the stress of surgery , infections, excess food or inadequate medication can make the sugar go up. Your father probably has Type 2 diabetes ( 90% of diabetes is this type) and readjustment of medicine, diet and stress relief will correct it. Be on the look out for infections at the surgery site or elsewhere. While adjusting medicines, one should avoid very low blood sugar( hypo) as this is more harmful than mild elevation for short periods. I shall be happy to answer any other query you might have.
