I have been told that my bladder retains 70mls of urine after each visit to the toilet. Why has this happened? Is there a natural remedies for this apart from drinking lots a clear fluids which sent you to empty approx hourly? I am 70 years old and also have several night visits. Thank you for your help, Naomi.

Urologist 's  Response
Hello Naomi and welcome to HCM.
As an Urologist, i fully understand your concern.
At your age, many people develop bladder outlet obstruction. Hence you would notice a reduced force in urinary stream, with frequency, urge to pass urine, and incomplete feeling of emptying the bladder, etc.Passing urine hourly isn't normal.Drink 8-10 glasses fluids daily, most of it, in daytime.Get examined by an Urologist. Then you'll need certain tests, like urine routine and culture, blood routine ,creatinine, sugar, urine flowrate and an ultrasound scan of abdomen. According to reports, proper advice will be given.
For an expert opinion, send the reports to me,as a direct question.

Urologist Dr. Dr. P. T. Patil's  Response
Hello
Thanks for query .

Based on the facts that your ultrasound scanning has revealed significant residual urine (70 ml) after passing urine .

This is due to enlarged prostate causing obstruction to out flow of urine and is very common after the age of 60 years .It needs to get investigated .

Please consult qualified Urologist for clinical examination and get following basic tests done to confirm the diagnosis.
1) Urine routine and culture.
2) Ultrasound scanning of abdomen and pelvis
3) Serum PSA.

Further modality of treatment whether medical line of treatment or surgery will will depend upon result of these tests and final diagnosis.
