Suggest Treatment For Intense Pain In Mouth Radiating Towards Neck And Arm

Hi my husband has had a toothache for 4 days now and he's been to see the dentist. He's currently on antibiotics but we expected the pain to go after 48 hours but literally every night when he lies down for bed he gets intense pain starting in his mouth and travels down his neck and arm. He is in so much pain even after taking cocodamol tablets and ibuprofen. Why is he still experiencing this kind of pain?
Thanks

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR CONCERN.

Thanks for your query .The symptoms you mention in your query are not actually due dental problem alone ,i mean it is possible that there is dental problem but there is for sure other medical condition known as cervical radiculopathy. In this condition pain radiates towards neck ,shoulder and arm and it occur due to injury near root of spinal nerve.

I would suggest you to consult neurologist .Doctor may order diagnostic test like MRI,CT scan,X-ray to confirm the condition and to rule out other conditions. Most of the time the condition resolve by its own within fer weeks but there are chances of relapse .

Doctor may recommend you soft collar and physical therapy.He/she may also prescribe painkillers like ibuprofen ,corticosteroids and sometimes injection of steroids.

If condition still persists then there are surgical procedures also available. You should also consult dentist once to rule out any dental problem and get treated if it is there .

Hope your concern has been resolved.
