Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I was diagnosed with an e. coli infection. I began taking Levoquin. Suddenly I had terrible, crippling joint pain, tendonitis in the back of one leg, and a fever of between 99 and 101. I live in Nicaragua, and chikungunya is rampant where I live. My doctor suggested that I had unfortunately contracted chiky at the same time as my e. coli infection, and she said I should continue with the levoquin. After three days of Levoquin, I was unable to walk or use my hands/thumbs. The pain was unbearable - and unfortunately consistent with both chikungunya AND levoquin damage. I stopped taking the levoquin. two days later I have no joint pain and my temp is normal.
Chikungunya related joint pain can last for a week. The pain can be debilitating and long term in some patients especially with older age and other co morbid conditions. Painkillers can be continued for a few more days for better pain relief. Avoid dehydration. Mosquito repellent creams should be used daily since the region is endemic for the disease.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Saranya Ramadoss, General & Family Physician
