Suggest Treatment For Lung Cancer

Dear Doctor,
My friend's sister is 37 years old. She was diagnosed with 4th stage lung cancer last April 2011. She was given Iressa and she took 30 tablets for 30 days. She discontinued the medication due to financial constraint. She did not undergo chemo theraphy.
At present, the patient is at the Philippine Lung Center. Her doctor said that she only has few days to live. The doctor is giving her pain reliever because the cancer cells spread to her bones. She is in pain. Is there a way we could help her extend/save her life?
Thank you very much for sharing your time/talent.

Hi
Since your friends sister is suffering from stage 4 lung cancer ans she is unable to take oral chemotherapy tablets Iressa that is Gefitinib in her case the only aim of treatment now should be basic supportive care to to improve her quality of life as she has only 3 to 6 months of time to live.
Since the cancer has spread to bones and she is having extreme pain i would suggest she takes morphine tablets 10 mg 4 times daily after food.

Thanks for your question on HCM. Sorry to say but there is no cure for Lung Cancer in 4th stage. Only supportive treatment is available.
Supportive treatment in the form of
1. Pain Killers
2. Multi vitamins and multi minerals.
3. Hematinics
4. Psychological support and end of life issues.
For pain relief in such terminally ill cancer patients, I prescribe Fentanyl Transdermal patch in my patients. it is centrally acting and slowly, sustained released patch. Since it is prescibing medicine, I advice you to consult about your doctor first for this.
This gives more pain relief in my patients.
Wish you good health.
