Hi,I am Dr. Gopal Goel (Orthopaedic Surgeon). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have just been prescribed by my doctor Actonel EC Bombi Ec tab+35mg 1.25g(equivalent to 500mg Ca one weekly. I have just read the reviews and I am now very averse to taking this medication, I have just been diagnosed with Osteoporosis, I am 70, a diabetic and take tablets, plus Karvea, and caduet. Can you please advise me, I did ask my doctor of side effects but he told me I would be okay.
Hi, Thanks for asking. Based on your query, my opinion is as follows. 1. Side effects are present in every medication. Unless started and if its not complicating, treatment is necessary. 2. Osteoporosis is a debilitating disease, which increases the risk of fracture. Actonel is very helpful in improving bone density and reduce osteoporosis. Calcium will help in improving mineral levels. 3. Most common side effects are related to GI disturbances. If necessary, proton pump inhibitors can be added to reduce GI disturbances. 4. If you do not want to take it orally, infusions can be taken monthly or annually, depending on your choice. Treatment is very important. Hope it helps. Any further queries, happy to help again.
