Suggest Treatment For Pain Due To Osteoarthritis In Joints

Hi I live in England and my husband of 3 years has very aggresive osteoarthritis in every joint but his left arm. This is a result of crush injuries he received 12 years ago when he broke 106 of our 206 bones. Our doctors here have him on Tramadol 4x daily and Paracetamol 100mgs x4 daily, they do nothing to relieve his terrible pain at all. He has to have an MRI scan on Friday to find out the extent of it all and to try and pinpoint where the trapped nerves are that has rendered his right hand useless. He is due to have physio when the results are back. We have both been taking Rosehip and Glucosamine for a while now, but he had a bad fall a month ago and it has knocked his self confidence for six, to the extent when he is at home he has to use his stick again as he feels so unsafe. My question is this, is there anything I can get for him over the counter that will help to relieve the pain.

Orthopaedic Surgeon 's  Response
Dear patient your husband has got secondary osteoarthritis as per your description which might be due to multiple bone fractures involving joint surfaces. Since more pain is now on left arm we have to assess the severity of arthritis in left arm joints. I would advise Xray of involved elbow and shoulder anteroposterior and lateral views to confirm diagnosis. If his right hand is not functioning due to nerve damage then EMG NCV of right upper limb should be done to assess nerve damage. For secondary osteoarthritis if it's severe omlnly painkillers will not help. If it's shoulder or elbow arthritis joint replacement is good option for pain relief and to get back range of motion. You should take visit to expert orthopaedic surgeon with Xray report. All the best.
