Suggest Treatment For Pain In The Hip Joint

My husband is experiencing excruciating pain in his upper outer right thigh hip area with a dark bruise about the size of a plum. He hasn t fallen or hit it on anything that he can remember no injury it just came out of nowhere. It has been 4 days and the pain is getting worse. He is 42 years old. Is this cause for serious concern? Should I take him to the emergency room?

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
I studied your husband's case and I think there can be following possibilities.
1. Hip synovitis - It can be collection of fluid in hip joint. it is usually caused by sudden twisting of hip joint.
2. Groin strain- it can be a muscle pull like condition with ecchymosis due to blood getting accumulated in muscles.
So I would recommend you to show it to emergency and get him examined, also if needed a ultrasound of hip joint or MRI will help. I would also recommend you to apply hot water fomentation and Tablet Brufen for pain relief.
