Suggest Treatment For Painful Knee While Walking After Injury

Age 71. Stumbled hard and fell onto sidewalk three days ago. Knee hit surface, but not very painful. Next day a bit worse and from then on if I walk a while eventually leg aches a lot in area of knee. But no sharp pains of any amplitude on specific movements, or limits in use - just the very strong ache beginning after about one hour of use, as with walking, and a slightly unpleasant feel to the knee even when strong ache has receeded. This ache continues after the exercise or use. Should I give the situation some time, or go to a orthopedist pretty soon?

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hello,
Thanks for your query.
From the description, I feel that you might have sustained a SOFT TISSUE STRAIN involving your ligaments or tendons.

This will generally resolve within few weeks by the following measures -
* Rest to the injured part and dont involve in activities which puts additional strain on the injured tissues.
* Ice packing should be applied for about 20 minutes once in every 2 hours.
* Analgesic & anti inflammatory medications

Get an Xray done to ruleout any bony injury.
If your symptoms are not getting better with the above measures, I suggest you to consult an orthopedic surgeon for further evaluation and management.

I do hope that you have found something helpful and I will be glad to answer any further query.
Take care
