Suggest Treatment For Painful Red Swollen Hand With Slight Infection
my 9 month old granddaughter has a very red swollen hand. been on iv drip they say its cellulitis but it is not getting better. just changed antibiotic and thinking it may be a spider bite. but there is no point of entry. this has been going on for 4 days
no improvement

the blood work says there is a slight infection. and she doesn't have a fever. but in terrible pain
Thanks for your questions. It sounds like a cellulitis. Its important that your daughter is on the correct antibiotics. The only way of knowing this would be to identify the bacteria causing the infection. In 50% of cases it can be grown from the blood stream of the person who is infected and then other antibiotics can be tested against it in the lab.
If the current antibiotics are not helping and the infection is getting worse then they may need to be changed. Further investigations such as an ultrasound or MRI scan may need to be done to look for a collection of pus or an sbcess.
Its also important to elevate the arm and splint the arm (this will help with the pain).
She should be on regualr pain medication as well the antibiotic treatment.
