Suggest Treatment For Severe Diarrhea And Abdominal Pain

I have severe diarhea, almost uncontrollable at times - I liked ice cream, cottage cheese, feta cheese and finally noticed I have LI symptoms within 5 hours of eating those - Two weeks ago I quit drinking any kind of milk and milk products, except lactose free milk for 2 weeks, and for the first time in 2 years was diarhea free. Then I went to a friends and had scalloped potatoes with cream and butter - delicious - and now have diarhea, some bloating, abdominal pain. I did not think the small amount of milk/cream would bother me, but it appears to...I went to nurse practitioner six months ago and she did not mentionn lactose intolerance and gave me a healthy intestine diet, but that did not heolp as it did not say omit milk products. I finally diagnosed this myself with small testings My question is: I have omitted milk from cereal (drinking lactose free now) but can eating milk/cream in a large helping of potatoes cause that MUCH PROBLEM?.

Hi,
Welcome to health care magic,

Yes,you are having lactose intolerance as a result of which you had severe diarrhoea in the past.

If there is abdominal pain with diarrhoea then there will be chances of electrolyte imbalance in the blood with gastric upset.

You should be immediately monitored for vitals signs like pulse, blood pressure etc.

You can take plenty of water with lemon juice (added salt),coconut water or WHO oral rehydration solution.

It could be because of acute gastroenteritis or colitis or food poisoning at present apart from your lactose intolerance.

The important thing is to combat pain and diarrhoea and for which you would require antiemetic drugs (mostly injectables or oral) with antibiotics (norfloxacin with antiprotozoals like ornidazole preferred) with other water and electrolyte fluids, prebiotics and probiotics.

So,it would be advisable that if you consult physician for all routine blood investigation and proper treatment.

Home treatment might help but you actually requires complete course of treatment as I explained.

Thanks and Regards,
