Suggest Treatment For Severe Laryngitis

I was in Cuba last week. On Sunday night on our return, all was okay. Tuesday morning I awoke with extreme laryngitis. Now the voice has returned and I can swallow again. Last night, Friday night, I started running a fever of 101. A little blistering rash started two days ago on my right side and I treat several times a day and night with witch hazel and anti fungal powder. On Thanksgiving evening I started with 250 Cipro. The internist had given me Cipro if a stomach condition happened in Cuba. Think I should go to an urgent care center this morning.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

I think that you are suffering from inflammation of vocal cords known as laryngitis that can be due to bacterial or viral throat infection and in case if it has followed by fever it is most probably viral infection. As it is a viral infection it will resolve once the virus will complete its cycle in human body.

As of now you can start with supportive treatment to relieve the symptoms like:
• Gargle with a warm saline solution that is by mixing 1 teaspoon salt in a glass of water and warm it to make a lukewarm solution.
• Take a combination Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen that will help in reducing fever and pain.
• Chew a vitamin C pellet daily.
• Do steam inhalations and use a humidifier in your room.
• Avoid spicy and chilled foods.
• Sip on warm water throughout the day.

Hopefully, the symptoms will resolve within a week and if it worsens consult a general physician and get evaluated.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Honey Arora
