Suggest Treatment For Shingles In An Elderly Person

I have a question about my friend... She is 69 and just getting over shingles, but a rare type even the Drs are wondering about. They put on a med for shingles and she got the hives all over her body. 3 days ago the Drs put her on a steriod to calm the hives down and she still has the hives. Any idea what might be causing this? Her husband died in August so maybe stress and grieving?? She had some new carpet put in and I thought maybe the chemicals might have made her react like that. We are all puzzled.

Hi friend,

Shingle is cause by the chicken pox virus. It often occur in elderly and immunocompromised patient. Antiviral medication will reduce the duration of the outbreak and reduce pain associated with the outbreak. Since she developed an allergic reaction to the antiviral medication, her doctor prescribed steroid to reduce the allergic reaction and reduce the inflammation. Her allergic reaction should improve with the course of steroid.
