Suggest Treatment For Swollen And Painful Labia Majora

My left labia is very swollen since yesterday. I won t be able to get to a Dr until possibly Saturday. I am really concerned it is an infection. Can my symptoms worsen if so, what will they be. Also any over the counter treatment until I can have the Dr check me? Is it really unsafe to wait until Saturday to get checked out? This is the first time ever experiencing this. I am very nervous?

Hello,

The most common cause of swollen labia is Bartholin's cyst. When Bartholin's gland becomes infected, they cause swelling, pain, tenderness and swelling in the labia and skin around the vagina. Get clinically examined by a gynecologist, you may need to get it incised, drained and antiseptic dressing done.

Presently, you are advised to take care of your hygiene, take naproxen, one stat after food to get rid of pain swelling and discomfort. You can take a course of antibiotic like Augmentin to help it heal faster. Control your blood sugar level. The other medical conditions that can cause such symptoms are trichomoniasis, bacterial vaginosis, yeast infection, etc.

You're treating gynecologist will ask you to do STD tests to detect any STI, if reports are positive, you ill be treated with antibiotics / antivirals. You can apply ointment clotrimazole on the affected area for fungal infection. Cold compress is helpful. Abstain from sex and any sexual activity for a couple of days while you are being treated.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
