Suggest Treatment For Swollen & Bruised Elbow & Forearm

my 11 yr old son injured his righ elbow and forearm in football practice last night when his elbow became lodged in another boys facemask after a hard collision. It is now very swollen and bruised, it has been x-rayed and is not broken, his coaches think he should still practice, I think no. What do you think? It is very, very dark and he can t even lay it on a pillow without it hurting.

Orthopaedic Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

It's definitely not a great idea to engage in any form of contact sports with swollen and painful elbow let alone football. Also it's common to have sustained a bony injury in a growing child even though the initial x rays were inconclusive for a bony injury especially in the elbow. So my best advise would be to rest and ICE the area until the swelling disappears and painless range of motion and strength is regained and if you do not see a significant improvement in one week, take a second opinion.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. John Chacko, Orthopedic Surgeon
