Hi,

Swollen glands or lymph nodes are common symptoms of a flu or viral infection. In most cases, the swelling goes down on its own once the infection resolves. However, if the swelling persists or recurs frequently, it is important to have it evaluated by a healthcare professional.

The lump in your neck that you describe could be a swollen lymph node or a cyst. A healthcare professional can perform a physical exam to determine the cause and recommend appropriate treatment.

Treatment options may include:
* Warm compress: Applying a warm compress to the affected area may help reduce swelling and ease pain.
* Over-the-counter pain relievers: NSAIDs) like ibuprofen will reduce pain and inflammation.
* Antibiotics: If the swelling is caused by a bacterial infection, your healthcare professional may prescribe antibiotics to help clear the infection.
* Surgery: In rare cases, surgery may be necessary to remove a cyst or swollen lymph node that is causing persistent pain or discomfort.

Regarding your question about your grandson, it is possible for a thyroid issue to cause growth problems and short stature. It is important to have him evaluated by a pediatrician if you have concerns about his growth and development.
