Suggest Treatment For Swollen Tonsil And Sore Throat

I have had a sore throat for nearly 10 days now. My tonsils are swollen and it hurts to swallow both liquid and solids. I have removed some tonsil stones but am still having pain. When removing some of the stones my tonsils bled. Is that normal or have I damaged my tonsils?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have swollen tonsil and sore throat which is probably due to untreated throat infection leading to Pharyngitis and Tonsillitis.

I would suggest you to consult an Otolaryngologist next time when you have the symptoms and he can do a clinical examination and can also advise you investigations like throat swab culture to check for bacterial as well as viral culture along with pH level of throat. Doctor may recommend tonsillectomy .

You can be advised to take antibiotics like Augmentin OR Azithromycin to resolve the infection , anti-inflammatory painkillers like Ibuprofen can be taken to relive pain . Do warm saline gargles, steam inhalation and using a humidifier.

- You can also suck throat lozenges to soothe the throat.
- Gargle with antiseptic solution like few drops of betadine in water.
- Chew Vitamin C pellets to boost up the immunity.
- Avoid spicy and chilled foods.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
