Swelling In Foot, Bruise, Pain, Burning Sensation After Horse Stepping On Toe. X Ray Done. Broken Bone?

A 1200 pound horse stepped on the top and left part of my bare foot five weeks ago. It was excruciating. My foot swelled. Bruised. I went to emergency e following day. It was more bruised and swollen. I could walk on it but with a limp. H said he did not think it was swollen. X rayed it. Sent me home. Dr said he was not the radiologist. Over five days my entire foot swelled. Turned black and blue. Second toe to baby toe. Entire top foot and along side. But it appeared to get better after the first week. Two weeks later ...swelling decreased as did pain and bruising. This last week however I have localized pain to the top left mid section. It is still swollen. Slightly. Lumpy. Tingly. And burns!! Could it have been broken and still ? I am returning to hospital tomorrow.

Hello,

Injury of that nature is likely to cause damage to the structures.
Swelling is due to the inflammation of the tissues.
Swelling will subside as the inflammation reduces.
But black and blue discolouration indicates that there may be a hematoma formation or injury to the vascular structures.
Consult your doctor and get yourself evaluated.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. Saurabh Gupta's  Response
Hello,
Thanks for writing to us

It is very unfortunate that your primary doctor could't read the xray. It could be broken bone as still you have pain and swelling.
I suggest you to consult an orthopaedician nearby for a detailed examination. You may get repeat X-ray of foot under his/her guidance.

I do hope that you have found something helpful and I will be glad to answer any further query.
