Taking Diltiazem To Lower Heart Rate. Swollen Leg, Feet, Ankles. Difficulty Swallowing. How Serious Is This?

My husband has been taking diltiazem 30 mg three times daily beginning yesterday Nov 7th to lower his heart rate. Just about an hour ago we noticed that his legs, ankles, and feet are swollen. He also has trouble swallowing food and liquid. How serious is this side effect. What would you advise us to do. His Dr's office is closed for the weekend. Cindy Thompson

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

It may be due to reaction from the drug. You should stop this and need to consult your doctor for examination once. There may be chances of severe allergic reaction due to the drug.

This is vasodilator and swelling in legs, ankles and feet are known side effect. But trouble swallowing food and liquid should raise the concern. This may be allergic response. So consult your doctor for further management. He may require antiallergic (anti histamine) drug and steroid for immediate management.

Regards
