Taking Exforge For High Blood Pressure. Does It Contain Propranolol? Any Side Effect?

Hi Dr Grief ...I have been prescribed 'Exforge' 5/320 for high blodd pressure. I have never taken any medication in my life before. I am 70 years of age and very fit - both mentally and physically. I have been taking this medication for 6 weeks. I feel quite tense and anxious - a feeling I have not previously experienced. Does this drug contain propranolol? I have read that propranolol can cause depression. The instructions on the packet say 'do not take potassium while being treated with this medicine"....I eat very healthy natural food, especially those naturally containing potassium - I wonder if there is a link? thank you for your assistance. kind regards Carolyn

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Exforge is a combination of two blood pressure medications. Neither of these medications is propanolol.

It contains amlodipine and valsartan. The dose that you are taking contains 5 mg of amlodipine and 320 mg of valsartan.

These medications are in 2 different families of blood pressure medications and work in different ways to control the blood pressure.

In terms of potential side effects , it is very rarely associated with anxiety and nervousness. IF you did not experience any of these symptoms before and believe there may be a link to your medication ,then you should consider speaking to your doctor.

I hope this helps
