Taking Tegretol. Will It Affect The Coumadin Levels?

I am taking Tegretol and my Psychiatrist states it can affect Coumadin levels(INR). My Coumadin nurse says it doesn,t. What am I to believe? My level went up to 7.1 today and the nursr decreased the amount of Coumadin I take and said I could eat vegetables and tomato juice until I return again. Is this safe if Tegretol affects the levels?

Hi there ~

I understand your concerns. Yes, tegretol can affect your INR and your warfarin/coumadin levels. It depends on each person too. I wonder if your INR levels have been recently checked. I recommend that you continue to take the medication tegretol which might be vital for another medical condition and also use INR levels to know what kind of issues you have had in the past that are making you to act up and hopefully keep the INR levels in the normal range by titrating your coumadin. I hope this helps. Take care and have a lovely day!
