Teenager. On And Off Fever, Back Ache. On Paracetamol And Azithromycin. Possibility Of Something More Serious?

Hi doctor, my daughter, 16, weight 43 kg, is suffering from fever since past 2 days. Fever range 100 -102. Temperature goes down by taking Paracetamol 500 and recurs after about 4-5 hours. Normal water sponging helps. Azithromycin 250 BD has also been prescribed. She got the fever from a classmate who was in fever. Now she has back ache after being in bed for last two days. Is it a vital fever only our could it be anything else as well?

Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about what your daughter is experiencing. I wish her a speedy recovery.

From the information you have provided, it sounds like fever from an infectious origin. This could very much be a flu if she has no other symptoms. Though antibiotics are not always required, they don't hurt either. Responding to paracetamol just to return later is normal as the drug's effects wane.

If she has other symptoms, then you may need to get her consulted. The backache is expected for someone who has been in bed for 2days. I will suggest that she considers lying on a hard surface so as to relieve herself.

For now, i think it is just a minor feverish episode unless new symptoms add to the above listed. Continue with the medications and let her try to drink and eat well to accelerate her recovery.

I wish her well. Wish you courage as you look after her. If you have more questions, please ask us and we shall gladly address them.
Thanks for having used our services today and hope to welcome you back soon again.
