Torn MCL And ACL. Had Surgery. Have Sciatica, Painful Shoulder. Chances Of Autoimmune Diseases?
I tore my ACL and MCL in December. I had surgery in January. Now I feel I have sciatica on the opposite side of my body as well as very painful shoulder, perhaps bursitis. I am going to the orthopedic today. I am young. 25 years old and active. Since the ACL surgery I haven't been able to be quite as active, but I still take and teach yoga every day. I am not overweight. I do not have diabetes. I am wondering if all these injuries and conditions are related. Is there an autoimmune disease that attacks the joints that I might have or should ask about?

1. What was the cause of the Injury: Sports or Trauma?
2. Because Sciatic nerve supplies the muscles of back of the knee, either it can be a referred pain or else your Orthopedic Doctor is in better position to explain the condition.
3. In Ayurveda we hold Ligaments (Snayu) similar in properties to that of Kapha (Prakriti) i.e. both provide STABILITY to the body, thus whenever there is any derangement in one of them this results in reduced activities .
4. Rheumatic disease is one such Autoimmune disease which affects the Joints,so ask about it with your Physician.
5. You can Practice Utkatasan (chair pose),Trikonasan (triangle pose), Utthita Parsvakonasan (extended side angle pose) to strengthen your Knees,thighs,hips and ankles

From your case i don't feel like you have an auto immune disease attacking your joints. As far as sciatica and bursitis are concerned, they are 2 different entities. Bursitis will get healed in 1 or 2 weeks with proper rest and medication, but sciatica needs proper medication. I strongly recommend you approach any ayurvedic physician near you so as to get the treatment for sciatica at the earliest.
