Treatment For Red Bump On Head After A Hit

Hi, Saturday I was throwing away a piece of paper in my recycling box underneath the sink. I leaned down forward and had my head turned toward the right, not looking at tje sink. I leaned down too fast and hit my head on the edge of the granite counter top. I have goose eggs and redness extending from behind my left ear up to my hairline. VERY sore and hasn t changed with Tylenol. I m pretty tired, but I wouldn t say dizzy. What did I hot and should I go to the doctor?

Hi, thanks for asking from HCM.

I can understand your concern. It is good that you are not dizzy. Goose egg like swelling, redness over it and tenderness are common manifestations of head injury. As you are having severe pain and redness behind ear, you must rule out few signs of severe head injury

: Loss of consciousness for more than 5 minutes
: Persistent headache which is not getting relieved by painkillers or progressively increasing headache
: Focal deficit
: Seizures
: Bleed from nose, ear or throat

If you develop any of above signs, you must consult ER as soon as possible. The doctor will evaluate you and advise CT head to rule out any fracture or intracranial bleed. Intracranial bleed may require surgical evacuation if large in size. Fracture is usually managed by painkillers and rest.

If no above signs, you should wait at home. You can follow few tips to get relief

: Apply icepacks at swelling site
: Head end elevation
: Take painkiller tablet like Diclofenac sodium after proper prescription. You can take Tylenol for pain relief, but it will not reduce swelling and redness.
: Avoid medication which can cause sedation like anxiolytics.
: Avoid pressure at swelling site while lying down.

Hope it will help you. If still in doubt, do let me know. Thanks. Take care.
