Twitching On The Right Side Of Mouth, Low On Magnesium. What Could This Be ?

Hi, The other day I felt a twitching on the right side of my mouth it lasts not even 2 seconds but comes and goes for the past 1-1/2 days. Someone told me it's stress which I've been going thru alot lately and low magnesium which I've been diagnosed as having not enough in my system. I've been taking a Mag/Cal/Zinc vitamin for years but I got the flu and refused to take that big pill and haven't in a few months until the other day and I doubled up on the vitamin. Today it seemed to be gone but tonight I feel a little flutter but it's not that buzz like the other day. Should I wait to see if this goes away in a few days before calling my Doctor. Its just scares me that I've had my entire colon removed several years ago due to Ulcerative Colitis so it's like NOW WHAT?!? Hope it's nothing.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello dear,

The twitching in the right side of the mouth can be attributed to increased sensitivity of the nerves which supply those muscle groups.
The causes can be:
1. Hypocalcemia- calcium is essential for nerve conduction & decreased level of calcium can cause such symptoms.
2. Dietary deficiency of nutrients like Vit B6, Vit B12 & Folic acid, etc,
3. Stress & hyperventilation
4. Peripheral neuropathy due to metabolic reasons

Symptomatic relief can be obtained by intake of multi vitamins & calcium supplements.
However, if symptoms still persist, kindly consult your Physician for a proper clinical examination.
Investigations like complete blood count & nerve conduction studies will be helpful.

Wishing you a good health.
Take care.
