Vomited Blood Infused Emissions, Brown Emesis, Abdomen Not Distended, No Grimace On Palpation, Regurgigating. Pedialyte Given. Advise?
Hello. My baby daughter was brought home yesterday afternoon after an uneventful vaginal delivery. She had pooped several times, urinated twice (that we could tell). Her stomach is not distended and she does not grimace on palpation. Her lungs are clear on auscultation. The problem we find ourselves in this morning is that she had vomited up first blood-infused emissions, and now consistently brown emesis. In the first 24 hours, she regurgitated, but it was unremarkable and she tolerated several feedings with no emisis. We have now given her pedialyte that mostly stays down, with only remnants of brown now coming back. She sleeping soundly after her last feeding of pedialyte. Should she be in the emergency room right now? If not, what do you expect is happening.
It is very common for infants to pass motion very frequently following breast feedings. However the vomiting of blood coloured vomitus needs to be assessed. In the first day it can be due to ingested blood at delivery but blood coloured vomitus later can be due to ingested blood from cracked nipples. If the nipples are not cracked then the cause needs to be worked up.
I hope I have answered your query to your satisfaction.
