Was Taking Topamax With Lamictin, Lost Weight And Felt Good. No Good Results With Generic Version. Help?

Hi, I have epilepsy (grand mal) where a fit usually is triggered by stress, lack of sleep and stress. 3 years ago my psichiatrist prescribed Topamax to me along with Lamictin etc. I lost a lot of weight and felt (and look) really good. I eventually went off it and stayed on Lamictin and Kepra only for the epilepsy. Four months ago I asked my dr to prescribe Topomax to me with the Lamictin and Kepra. She gave me the generic version Toplep. I had a baby 2years ago and thought maybe this would help stabilize my moods and help get rid of the xtra kilo's. So far NOTHING. What's up? Should I ask the dr to higher the dosage from 50mg to 100mg? Or is it because it's the 2nd time round or maybe because the generic version is not so effective? Should I leave the Lamictin?

Hi,
Thanks for writing to us,

All the drugs, Topiramate, Lamotrigine and Levetiracetam are antiepileptics. One of the side effects of topiramate is weight loss and hence preferred by doctors in patients who are not thin and lean. This drug is rarely used for the indication of reducing weight alone in a patient who suffers from epilepsy. In your case the drug has been used as an antiepileptic and unlikely as a weight loss agent. Both Topamax and Toplep are the brand names and the generic name is topiramate. All the drugs are available in the market manufactured by different companies and hence with a brand name.
The drug dosage may be increased (by the doctor) only in case the seizures are not being controlled. Exercise and diet control is the best way to lose weight.

Hope this helps.
