What Actions Should Be Taken If Knee Is Been Hit Hard ?

I fell about a week ago and hit my knee really hard--I thought it was just scraped, but the entire knee is now bruised. I also have some swelling, a few tender points, the knee feels stiff, and it is a bit uncomfortable to walk on it--the cut part is healing well. I seem to have a really high pain tolerance and have broken bones in the past without realizing it. I am pretty sure I need to get it checked now, but should I go to my regular doctor or what? ( F, 59 years old, but very active and in good physical shape).
