What Are The Chances Of UTI From Urine Soaked Undergarments?

I was recently told by a nurse that its better to let my 96 yr old incontinent mother sleep thru the night rather than change her wet under garments during the night. I was told that laying in her own urine wont hurt her skin if she has a barrier cream on skin. I was also told that there is no risk of UTI from urine soaked under garments

Hi, urine soaked undergarments usually cause excoriation of the local skin due to formation of products by bacterial fermentation and after excoriation, there will be further colonizations of the region with the bacteria and may lead to urinary tract infection. In a 96 years old lady, the immune system and immune responses are poor and the symptoms may appear very late when already the things have worsened. It will be better, if the patient may be given an adult diaper in the night which may be changed every 3 hours to keep the patient in good sleep as well as dryness.
