What Are The Chances That I Have A Thyroid Cancer?
I have swollen lymph nodes, and diagnosed as TB adenitis. Given to 8 months TB meds. Some lymph nodes remain after that, 1 lymph node biopsied (FNA) indicating chronic lymphadenitis. I also have calcified, hyphoechoic, irregular margin on thyroid nodule per ultrasound with biopsy (FNA) indicating colloid nodule, calcified. What is the chances that I have thyroid cancer that metastasized to the lymph nodes? Thanks.
Hello, Thank you for the query. Fine needle biopsy is very sensitive in diagnosing thyroid cancer. But it depends on the physician who performs it, the localization of the nodule, it's dimensions ect. The sensitivity in specialized centers is about 98%. So the risk for misdiagnostication or false negative result is 2%. If your treating physician has high suspects for thyroid cancer, he may recommend surgical removal even if FNa result is negative.
