Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Are The Complications For S/p Prostate Removal?
I am a nurse case manager who has been asked to contact a patient that has been identified through a patient survey. His concerns are that he is 3 years s/p prostate removal and feels that his PCP has not addressed his issues. No further details about the issues were reported. I would like to be prepared to answer his questions and need advice about the most common complications and recommendations. Thank you.
Hello, I can understand your concern. 1) Confirm about biopsy report of prostatic tissue to rule out malignancy 2) Check for PSA level before surgery. 3) Whether PSA were done periodically after surgery? If not, ask him to do same. 4) Value of PSA after surgery higher than before surgery or suspicion of malignancy on biopsy then ask him to consult urologist for cancer surveillance. 5) Ask for common prostate surgery related symptoms also i.e. urinary tract infection, dribbling of urine, burning micturition, pain in perineal region. 6) Main concern would be to rule out malignancy otherwise post-surgery treatment and/or surveillance is must. 7) Maintenance of adequate hydration is must to prevent urinary infection.
Hope I answered your query. If you have any further doubts, I would be happy to help you. Have a nice day!
