What Are The Long Term Side Effects Of Prozac In A Child?

My 10 yr old has been diagnosed with OCD and anxiety. She is on clonadin and now Dr. Wants to put her on Prozac. Very worried about how long she will have to take it and side effects. Once she starts Prozac will she be able to come off it or continue to increase forever????

Prozac may induce a remission after several months, and she could come off it then. But later she may need to go back on. Prozac can cause irritability, difficulty sleeping, or excessive sleepiness. It can also cause dizziness, headaches, upset stomach, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. In a very small group of children, it has been associated with increased risk for suicide, hostility, and unusual behavior. Is it a child psychiatrist making the diagnosis and prescribing the medicine? You want to be sure the doctor taking care of her is experienced in diagnosing and treating these kinds of problems in children. Hope this answers your query.
