What Are The Methods To Reduce Weight And Can I Take Creatine To Improve Muscle Growth?

Dear all, I have many questions. 1. I am Hypothyroid since ober 10 years. Every now and then I ve experienced problems with my weight, 2-3 Kilos. But in the last year I just gained 7 Kilos in 3-4 Months even though I eat around 1,200 -1,500/ day. I eat no Carbs, low fat und lots of vegetables. I do sport every day and 3 x Week I do weight training. On the past weeks I ve been teaking dissicated Thyroid extract and I still haven t loose any pound... So I m taking now Ashgawanda, and still without results, so now I m taking CLA (recommended dosis) and still not loosing weight, despite all my efforts. What else can I do? Now I m taking creatine, to improve muscle growth in ordert to increase my metabolic rate. So, can I take all this things, Ashgawanda with my Hypothyroidism-Meds? and Creatine? I also take all kinds of Supplements, like Iron... (since I am Vegan). I will appreciate your help Thanks

Oh dear what have you done? Thank you for coming to HCM. I will be upfront and say I cannot handle all these questions in one query but I will try to give you the guidance you need.

A vegan diet is healthy and many studies have shown positive impacts on the prevention of the development of chronic diseases (diabetes, heart disease, etc). Question 1: Hypothyroid and weight fluctuation: Usual problem: taking medications inappropriately, not providing enough iodine/selenium or combining your Synthroid with another interfering pill or supplement. Take your Synthroid in the am one hour before foods and preferably other meds or supplements. Because people don't pay attention weight fluctuations occur because of varying absorption rates. Soy has been shown to lower effects of treatment for hypothryoidism. And, to top it all off, you switched to dessicated Thyroid (a highly logical choice), but taking thryroid hormone directly from an animal means inconsistent dosage levels from pill to pill. Also you need iodine for the thyroid to make the inactive hormone T4 (in Synthroid) and for desiccated thyroid to work you need enough selenium or the inactive will not turn into the active T3.

There is no evidence that CLA is effective. I do not recommend it to anyone. For thermogenesis I advise green tea 3 times a day and a vitamin D and calcium supplement (vegetarian D is made of algae, may have to order it), you need B12, iron, enough zinc and enough iron to get your energy. I suggest you see a dietitian for a diet consult or use my specialist portal here at HCM.

It is impossible not to eat a carb. There are 5-12 gm. per vegetable serving of carbohydrate. Fruits have 15 g of carbohyrate per serving or per 1/2 banana, so working with a diet will help get your nutritional needs met as well. So you are eating carbohydrates, where do you get your protein??

Ashgawandha is very energizing. I am surprised it is not working. So, what that is telling me is your nutrition is not adequate. I need to stop here. I suggest you work with a dietitian and if you are in India there is Zest.MD and further questions and work that can be done through email I can help you with. Your virtual appointment with me would consist of your primary question and 3 followups. Just come through the specialist portal window and ask for me.

Thank you for allowing me to give you some guidance. Kathy Shattler,MS,RDN
