What Are The Pros And Cons Of Getting Out Of Coumadin?
Dad s 92 and been on Coumadin for years. Doctors took him off 2 years ago and he did suffer a small stroke and he s back on. Just had a fall last week due to low heart rate and had a pace maker put in. Hit his head and had a lot of bleeding, lucky he had someone with him, as is usual. Had his follow up Dr. visit today and did not put him back on Coumadin. Drs seem to be out of favor with it. Naturally we re scrared. How to get up to speed on pros and cons.
The use of an anticoagulant would reduce the chance of another stroke but there are possible risks.
If he is prone to falls and trauma there is a risk of bleeding because of the anticoagulant. Warfarin also interacts with a number of medications and foods so there are a lot of restrictions.
There are other anticoagulants that do not have the dietary or med restrictions but would still be associated with risk of bleeding.
I hope this helps
