Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I just posted this question, but it would be nice to get an answer from you: Is taking multiple small doses of acetominophen throughout the day harmful? My 84 year old father has been taking 500mg of Tylenol 4 to 6 times per day, everyday, for more than 1 year. He is taking it primarily for hip pain and also has hydrocodone 7.5/325 (more tylenol) that he takes once per day (it is prescribed to take every 4-6 hours as needed). I have told him it is like innoculating his body with Tylenol, and that it is slowing harming him. Is this harmful? Is it damaging the liver?
The amount of tylenol that is generally considered safe for patients over 60 years old is 3000 mg per day. If he is taking one of they hydrocodone with tylenol then he should limit the 500mg tylenol to no more than 5 per day. It is also important that he drink no alcohol and that he is not on any other medications that can irritate the liver. I suggest having his doctor check his liver enzymes twice a year just to make sure that they are remaining normal. If all these things are done then tylenol can be a very safe pain medication.
