Hi,I am Diwashish Biswas (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have been on Citalopram 20 for years for hot flashes. Still have periods at age 56 1/2, but hot flashes are better than they were when I started the Citalopram. However, I just discovered r ed that Citalopram has lots of side affects, primarily weight gain, and this is a Big issue for me. I have gained at least 35 pounds in the last three years. So a week ago I stopped taking the Citalopram. Today I am so woozy I won t drive. I have been a little scatterbrained too. Do I just put up with this or go back to taking a reduced dose or what?
Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries
Citalopram is a SSRI drug and the drug can cause weight gain in some individuals. You have been taking the drug for years so abrupt stoppage of the drug has most probably resulted in withdrawal symptoms. Dizziness, restlessness, insomnia, nausea, vomiting etc are common withdrawal symptoms. To prevent these symptoms usually doses of drug should be tapered gradually and not abruptly. As you are having persistent withdrawal symptoms so I would advise you to go for reduced dose of drug again and then taper the doses once you get stabilised. Take the drug with proper consultation of your doctor only.
Thanks, hope this helps you.
