What Are The Side Effects Of Levothyroxine?

My doc. put me on levothyroxine and I have been taking it properly everyday since September. My TSH has gotten really high and I have gained 7lbs. Don t tell me this is not a side effect of the medication. I know it is. I have been on it before. I have stopped taking it now. My thyroid level was only one point off when she prescribed it to me. Now its through the roof. How long will it take for my hormone levels and tsh to return to where it was before I started the levothyroxine?

An elevated TSH indicates your thyroid is not producing enough thyroid hormone. Levothyroxine is a replacement of thyroid hormone for people whose thyroid is underactive such as yours. What an increasing TSH and weight gains suggests is that your dose of Levothyroxine was too low. Stopping it will only aggravate the problem. Your hormone levels will not return to normal but will probably get worse. Talk to your doctor about the proper dose you should be taking, and be sure that there is not an ongoing problem occurring right now with your thyroid and also your pituitary gland. Hope this helps.
