What Are The Side Effects Of Nortriptyline 10mg During Pregnancy?

I take 150 mg of nortriptyline for migraine maintenance and I am wondering if it is safe to take while I am pregnant? I have done a bit of reading but most of it is on lower doses. With out Nortriptyline I have daily headaches and up to 4 actual migraines a week, so pretty much with out it I can not function. I don't want to harm our baby but I also don't want my migraines to stress me and baby out. At this time we are only trying to conceive.

Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries

Nortryptiline is a TCA (tricyclic) drug and the drug belongs to antidepressants class. The drug is known to cause good effects in control of pains due to migraine. But it should be avoided in pregnancy especially in first trimester of pregnancy. Theoretically any drug taken during first three months of pregnancy can cause harms to developing foetus. So as per my opinion you should consider stopping the drug before planning for pregnancy. For severe pains during pregnancy you can go for analgesics like Paracetamol which are relatively safer during pregnancy. If migraine increase in severity after stopping the drug during pregnancy then consult your doctor again to prescribe some drug which would be relatively safer for pregnant female.

Thanks, hope this helps you. Take care
