Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
i have had pbc for over 25 yrs. my treating gastro just found out that i have been taking trazadone as a sleep aid. He said: Get off the trazadone immediately and take something like Benydrl. I have been taking trazadone for years and have reported this to the gastro. how does trazadone afffect my liver? Is benydrl safe for me. does benedryl affect my glaucoma? thank you
Trazodon is an antidepressant drug that is commonly used as sleep medicine. The drug is metabolised by liver enzymes and it may result in liver toxicity, so it may affect liver. Benadryl is Dipehenhydramine and the drug is an OTC sleep medicine. The drug is metabolised by different route and is relatively safer in terms of liver damage. So over all it would be safe alternative for you for your liver functions.
Benadryl can increase intraocular pressure and may increase risk in acute narrow angle glaucoma, so it should be avoided in glaucoma or should be used with precaution only.
Thanks, discuss with your doctor before making any change in prescription.
