Hi,I am Diwashish Biswas (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My doctor gave me a cortisone injection for bursitis in my hip. The next morning I had blood drawn for liver enzyme tests,AST and ALT, along with T3, Free, Free T4, and TSH tests. Would the cortisone injection alter the test results for any of these tests?
Hi. I've gone through your query and I can understand your anxiety.
Cortisone injections has side effects like - skin thinning, loss of color , facial flushing - insomnia, moodiness - high blood sugar. - Damaged tendon, cartilage & bone - Infection & painfu joints.
Also higher doses & chronic usage of steroids can reduce the conversion of T4 to T3. Hence, hyperthyroidism will be converted to hypothyroidism. So it is useful in the trearment purpose. Then, liver enzymes like ALT, AST, ALP and GGT are also increased after steroid injection.
I advice you to reschedule or repeat the test once again after few days to get rid of the effects of injection & also to avoid biased reports.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further. Take care.
Regards, Dr. Yogapriya V, General and family physician.
