Hi,I am Diwashish Biswas (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My 22 year old son has been prescribed antidepressants, adderol, and ambien, and has been taking these for about 4 years. Due to a change in our insurance, his Pristiq scrip was changed to Effexor. At his last psychiatric s visit, his blood pressure was high. Advice was to take his own reading for a week and report back to the psychiatrist. His most recent reading today was 156 over 103, which seems quite high to me. Is Effexor a likely cause or might it be something else?
A known side effect of Effexor is an increase in blood pressure. If he is already on medicines for blood pressure, the doctor may need to adjust the BP medicine dose. If he's not had elevated pressure before, I would suspect the Effexor, in which case it might be a good idea to change to another antidepressant. Adderall can also increase BP, so if there has been a recent increase in dose, this might be the cause. Hope this answers your question.
