3 years ago I had a total knee replacement. I left the hospital 3? days later, the next morning I awoke with a blood clot in my lung. Went to another hospital for 5 days, got rid of the clot and now am on warfarin. I started on 7.5 every day, went to 10mg two days a week and 7.5 4 days. Then I went to 10mg 4 days and 7.5 3 days. I went for my INR reading 4 dr visits ago and the reading was good. So instead of my 4 week reading I stretched it to 5. It was good for 3 visits. I went to a new dr. 2 weeks later and she wanted another reading. It was 1.4. Now I gotta take 10 mg for 7 days and see her in a week. I was eating spinach and lots of garlic for those 3 months and in the 2 weeks between tests I hadn t eaten any Vit. K of value. I don t feel I m getting any help with my diet. Just getting more rat poison. I try to figure this out on my own, Am I supposed to eat more or less green? I eat carrots and I saw there is K in them, too. Sue
Thanks for asking to Healthcaremagic. Brief answer: Green leafy vegetables,Vitamin K injections,To some extent Intestinal bacteria also contribute. Detailed Answer: I believe you are on lifelong warfarin therapy based on the given history. If i was your treating physician,my aim would be to make the INR range around 2 to 3 and also suggest to limit/avoid in diet certain green leafy vegetables(Containing high Vitamin k) like broccoli, lettuce, spinach, sprouts etc which can decrease the efficacy of warfarin i.e decrease the INR value.I would suggest you to consult about this with your treating doctor and act accordingly.Hope this information helps you.Take care.
